While booted in Safe Mode, the video uses 640x480 at 16 colors. Any monitor can
usually handle this basic setting. If by default the laptop settings are at a higher 
resolution than the monitor can handle, the monitor can't display the video.

Try booting into Safe Mode and changing the default settings to 640x480, or 800x600. 
Right-click the desktop, select PROPERTIES and then SETTINGS.
