It was a loose connection between the keyboard to the computer. I checked it early in troubleshooting, and it seemed fine. But I crawled behind the computer tonight, pushed in and felt a pop. Background: computer hung up coincidentially at the same time the connection came loose. This mimicked symtoms from a corrupted OS to a bad hard drive. So check -- and re-check -- those connections.
