Just because the multitude of Microsoft operating system variants
have similar-looking names (that begin with "Windows")
does not mean that they are not very different.

One major difference is that there are 2 distinct bloodlines:
DOS-based: Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME.
NT-based: NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista.

Programs can be written to run under an NT-based OS only.
Contact your vendor and verify the OS requirements for his app.
