WMP 7.1 is best for any "Win9x" system (95-98-ME), really.

I still use WMP 6.4 for local .WAV file playback in 98SE and XP, I reset the .WAV file association to "mplayer2.exe" (WMP 6.4's filename in your 9x system with WMP 7-8-9, or your XP system)
