640x480 display after reloading W98

Greetings, I had to reload W98 into my old pentium 2 machine. Changing display settings
from 640x480 was inhibited afterwards. The display device was Standard PCI graphics
adaptor(vga). Next step we downloaded Everest home and determined the display device
was really 3dfxvoodoo3 3000. So I downloaded that driver into the machine and installed
it as the display device driver. That seemed to remedy the inhibited desktop size
and colors........until I restarted the machine, then the display size went back
to 640x480, and cannot be moved. One thing did stay, and that was all the color selections.
Any ideas? It's possible it has the wrong directx version. Not sure though. Thanks,
