Jeanine,
If your anti-virus program is running, it needs to be disabled temporarily. You should
close out your programs by right clicking the icons in the Systray area, rather than
using End task, when possible. If you run defrag in Safe mode, as Bob suggested,
programs won't load.
Try ME's defrag tool, just replace your original. It's not quite as particular and
is about 10x faster than 98's.

Clear out temp files first: In Internet Options - General tab - delete temporary
internet files and choose 'delete all Offline content'. Clear History. In Settings,
set the size of the TIF folder between 5-10 MB. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp
folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Note: some may be in use until you reboot.
Uncheck Taskmon in 'msconfig' under startup tab: Start - Run - type: MSCONFIG. Hit
Apply. Close all tray applications, then hit Ctl_Alt_Del and End Task on everything
but Explorer and Systray. Disable your screensaver by temporarily setting to "None."
Run scandisk in "Standard" mode then defrag,. First in the defrag settings, uncheck
"rearrange program files so my programs start faster". Reboot when finished.
If you have MS Office program installed, follow M$ instructions on how to kill the
Find Fast Indexer, and don't re-enable it. It's a serious resource hog:
