Start button causes general protection fault

Hi,
Just recently my computer gives an error message "Explorer caused a general protection
fault in module every time that I click on the 'Start' button. It then
closes down explorer and I have to reboot using ctl alt delete. Everything is then
fine again until I click on the start button when the same thing happens again.
I tried it in the safe mode and there were no problems when clicking on the start
button so I went into config.sys and disabled all the programs except Explorer and
systray and scanreg. On rebooting everything was fine ie no problems on clicking
the start button. I eventually found that the problem was a start up file called
filescan which in config.sys was showing a blank space against the program it should
run. Does anybody know if the 'filescan' program is important and what is the program
it should run and what does it do?. I have had 'filescan' in my start up programs
for years.
regards
Mike
