|The Primary Master is set to "None",
|so I change it to the hard drive, hit F-10 to save and exit. 
|It takes two, three or four attempts before Windows 98 will start.

If I'm hearing you correctly,
you're saying that CMOS is not remembering your settings.
Is your Real-Time Clock keeping lousy time as well?
