It could be the laser in the drive is in the process of failing and since the pic
discs are burnt, not pressed, they could well be failing also. They won't last forever
and it is well known that discs made 5 years ago and thrown in a drawer or even stored
correctly have trouble reading or failing altogether. Try the discs in another computer
and see what happens. If it is the discs, there isn't much you can do but try to
rescue what data you can with third party programs. Media should be multi-archived
as soon as possible and duplicated to new media every few years to protect from loss..
A five year old burner is at the end of it's life under normal use IME as they weren't
made as well as those in the past several years. You could have corrupt software,
but I would bet on the hardware going bad at this point and if so, replacing the
CD ROM might not work with your old software as the new model ROM won't be in the
catalog of drives supported by the software program.... If the laser is weak and
was trying to write discs, they may be readable and then start failing. I had that
happen with my old 7100 HP. It would only write colored dye discs, not the newer
silver discs that were released some years ago (it takes higher power which can burn
out older lasers IME). Pressed discs require less power and are easier to read.
No real easy answer without doing physical tests on the bench IMO..
