In Windows ME, I was receiving a kernel32.dll error when right clicking on the desktop.
I tried many things suggested in this post but this finally fixed the problem.
1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to edit the System.ini file.
2. Add the following line to the [boot] section of the file: drivers=mmsystem.dll
3. Save and then close the System.ini file.
4. Restart your computer.
This also brought back the volume icon in the task bar.
I hope this helps.
