WMV streaming

i had wmp6.4 [which comes with win98se]
after many embedded players in websites failed to play complaining i need a newer
media player, i decided to upgrade to wmp9

after screaming at microsoft that this new player is awful and that it hijacked all
my audio and video extensions [i really like the v6.4 since it's more pleasant],
i reassigned all of the extensions through mediaplayer 6.4. everything is fine except
one annoying problem.

before the upgrade, when i clicked on wmv/avi/mpg/wav/mp3 link in internet explorer,
the media player would come up and then start playing and DURING the playing it downloaded
the rest [streaming the media]
after upgrading, when i click those links, internet explorer downloads the WHOLE
file and when it finishes, it sends the file to media player 6.4
i hate it like that, if i wanted the whole file, i would choose "save target as".
note that this only happens with HTTP protocol.
MMS works as it should.

please help me restore the streaming of the files.

i am a power user so any messing with the registry is welcomed [i prefer it like
that, than running a "hot-fix"]
