|Someone sent me a xls file, but I cannot open them.

If (as Kiwi noted), you run into a limitation with the freebie viewer,
there is a full office suite that is gratis (and libre).
and is a replacement for M$ Office[1]. http://www.openoffice.org
You will need to download the install file for the entire suite[2]. (~75MB) 8-(
If, however, all you need is "Calc" (the spreadsheet program),
do a custom install and specify only that.
OTOH, if you install all of it, you get modules for
word processing, presentation (PowerPoint), database, and drawing as well.
