I am not sure why IMOEGA is limiting the hard drive applicability, since win98SE
can certainly support USB 2.0 hard drives. Perhaps they simply did not want to bother
developing a driver?
Look into other external hard drive brands, including the relatively cheap store
brands, such as those sold at CompuUSA and Circuit City. Consider the option of
buying a USB enclosure and placing a common IDE drive within it. Sometimes the enclosure+drive
are cheaper than a pre-assembled USB drive. Look for sales.
However, restrict the drive size to 120 Gig or less. 127 Gig is a sort of magic
number for all windows home systems before XP, and even then XP needs SP-1 for larger
drives.
If the hard drive does not come with a CD containing drivers, you will need to download
them from the manufacture's website. (If a USB enclosure, go to that website, not
the one for the IDE hard drive that goes inside of it.) XP should not need drivers
for an external USB 2.0 drive, but 98SE will. ME may also need drivers, but they
might be different than the ones for 98SE, or maybe the same. I do not know whether
2000 will need drivers, but if it does, they will certainly be different than those
fof 98. Still, all these driver options should be clear from the website. Hint:
pick a potential USB drive, then check the associated website for drivers, before
buying it.
Finally, format the drive as FAT32. XP can handle FAT32 and NTFS, but 98 and ME
can only handle FAT32.
