I have XP and have had no trouble getting win98 machines to read files on an external
USB disk with FAT32 format. I can also read the files inside my XP box using KNOPPIX,
a free LINUX-on-CD. Thus, I conclude that there is nothing intrinsic to XP's implimentation
of FAT32 that makes what you are tring to do impossible.
As for why it does not work, here are a few wild guess to check:
1. Is the XP partition compressed? I do not mean WINZIP compression, but XP's own
compression abilities. 98 may not recognikze this type of compression.
2. Was some drive overlay software used when installing the hard drive? This sort
of software is used to overcome a disk-size limitation in the computer's BIOS. Such
software can be operating-system dependent.
3. Is the hard drive larger than 127 Gig? XP with SP-1 or higher can handle such
drives, but 98 can not, at least not easily or directly.
4. In the case of EXCEL files, is the same (or compatible) versions of EXCEL installed
under XP and 98? Note that installing EXCEL under XP does NOT mean that it is automatically
installed under 98.
5. Have you tried writing the files to a CD, in a standard format, such as ISO or
Joliet, closing the CD, then reading via 98?
