IE is not on my desktop. It's buried deep in the menus. There are a couple Firefox extensions that can call IE for specific sites. I have IE View. When I call for the Microsoft Update, Firefox invokes IE in a new browser window.

Newer yet (I haven't tried it) is IE Tab which loads IE into a new tab.
