In 1998 I didn't know squat about computers and when my wife and I got one for home
I learned the basics from her. I believe if you can read about it you can learn
it (except in golf) so I read lots. I went thru several Oreilly books, Windows 98
in a Nutshell, Windows 98 Annoyances (thru which I found this forum) and Optimizing
Windows amoung others. I looked at many computer related web sites and subscribed
to several newsletters (I probably learned more about computing from Fred Langa's
newsletter and the sources he pointed me toward than anyone else) and tried to soak
up info from the truely intelligeeks. Virtually everyone was saying that putting
your swap file on a separate drive and in it's own partition was the way to go for
better performance and stability. C.K. may very well be right (who am I to argue,
I can't even spell doss), but was everyone else wrong? I think that even if It doesn't
improve speed it makes sense to me that it improves stabilty by reducing fragmentation.
I have 512 mb memory so the swap file is probably not being overworked ( I think
I used to check but haven't in years). My swap file is on my second hard drive and
other than the temp file all the other partitions are for backups so it is probably
not spending alot of time on other partitions except when I'm loading web pages.
For what it's worth those are my thoughts, I'm not trying to criticize anyone, I
am truely grateful to everyone who takes the time to respond with advice. And now
I'm going to reformat my hard drive and start from scratch ( I may not be back here
for awhile). Thanks, Bill
