Go to the Website of the MFG of the Hard Drive. Check and see if they have
a free program that will auto partition and format the hard drive.
You can use Nortons Gdisk.Exe to Auto wipe the hard drive and mbr, delete the
hard drive partition[s], then auto partition and format, and set the partition active..
Download GDISK.EXE.
Next add GDISK.EXE to the Win98 Boot Floppy.
Open Notepad.exe then copy and paste the text below into it.
Make sure you double space. {example hit the enter key of the keyboard after each
line.} NOTE: due to space I did not use double space in the text below.
....copy the text below..do not copy this line of text...
A:\GDISK 1 /DISKWIPE /Y
A:\GDISK 1 /MBR /WIPE /Y
A:\GDISK 1 /DEL /ALL /Y
A:\GDISK 1 /CRE /PRI /SZ:100P /FOR /Q /V:WIN98 /Y
A:\GDISK 1 /ACT /P:1
....end of copy and paste...do not copy this line of text...
Save the above notepad text to the Win98 Boot Floppy
Save as GDISK.BAT
Next right click on the autoexec.bat within the Win98 Boot Floopy
then click EDIT, then scroll down and find: GOTO QUIT
then type in CALL GDISK.BAT just below GOTO QUIT
Note it should look like this:
GOTO QUIT
CALL GDISK.BAT
Next close out the autoexec.bat and save the change.
Place the Win98 Boot Floppy {that contains Gdisk.exe & Gdisk.bat} into the Floppy
Drive, then boot the computer. When the menu appears choose "start with Cd-rom support".
The whole process could that two or three hours. The time limit depends on the size
of the Hard Drive.
When Gdisk Finishes and goes back to the A:\ Prompt
place the Win98 Install Cd into the Cd-rom Drive
Next go back to the A:\ prompt and type in
E:\ then hit enter
at the E:\ prompt type in
E:\win98\setup.exe /ie /im /is /v /nr
Then tap the Keyboard Enter Key
{if E:\ is not the cd-rom drive letter type in the correct Cd-rom drive letter instead
of E:\}
: make sure you remove the Win98 Boot Floppy before you reboot the computer. If not,
you will restart the whole auto process again...delete wipe, create etc.: you can
remove the gdisk.exe, gdisk.bat and re-edit the autoexec.bat if you want to return
the Win98 Boot Floppy to its usual state:
I've never had any problems using NORTON GDISK EXE, however, if
you use any of the information above you must agree that you are using it at your
own risk.
