Running defrag/scandisk etc. in safe mode as was suggested will certainly help, but 
there is another thing to do as well. If you are using ZoneAlarm firewall (and perhaps 
other firewalls too), turn it off once you are booted into safe mode. ZA make small 
disk accesses that causes defrag and scandisk to contantly restart. 

If you are using DSL or cable broadband, disconnect your machine from the modem to 
play it safe while having the firewall turned off.
