You have the right update KB912812 mentioned for the IE Cumulative Update,
and it should show up in both Add/Remove Programs and under Help/About
Internet Explorer within an IE window, providing it was downloaded/installed
properly (indicated with successful),
some updates require downloading/installing separately or you will experience problems.
However, this should be indicated on the Windows Update site prior to your selections,
just a thought since you stated:
"there were (4) updates downloaded a couple
of nights ago. one of them relates to the IE Update."
Sounds to me like you should follow, if possible, the scanreg /restore suggestion
and start over with the Critical Updates...
