The 'catch' with Win98 and TCP/IP

Due to the age of many Windows 98 installations, it is possible in some cases that
the Networking components may have to be reinstalled. Networking components are not
as integrated in Win98 as they are to 2K/XP, and they can in fact be uninstalled
and reinstalled in Win98 systems. They can also get 'corrupted' over the years in
Win98 systems, without affecting the general functionality of the O.S.
I have found a few Win98 computers where TCP/IP was not working properly, and these
computers all had working Dial-up connections! The problem came when the owners
upgraded to Broadband, and the Ethernet connections would not work. One owner was
even told he'd have to reinstall Windows 98 (by a certain computer repair
outfit that advertises on national TV!). All that was necessary was to rebuild TCP/IP,
and all of them were good to go!
There is a lot of info on the Internet on how to 'rebuild' your Win9x Networking
components, which can also come in handy if you get victimized by some of the nastiest
spyware that actually takes over your TCP/IP
protocols (ouch!).
