Thanks for your response Geng. I can see how misuse of the word mousepad could cause
confusion - but having said that maybe I've invented something - USB2 connected!!!!

My system info is ...
Windows 98 4.10.2222 A Clean install using Full OEM IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
GenuineIntel Intel(r) Celeron(tm) Processor
128MB RAM
55% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (4216MB free)
Available space on drive C: 4216MB of 9419MB FAT32

How much useless junk are you running?

The following were found at startup which when I enquired on google I came up with
the following...
zztp - keystroke logger - I have unchecked it but is still there once I do all below!!
scanregw - looks genuine as its takes a backup daily - no action taken.
NWEReboot - Nero file but possibly not required no -action taken.
AR2507MON - ***unknown-not found on google - pls advise***
TkBellExe - Realplayer file which I have unchecked but now appears twice, once checked
and once unchecked!!! Suggested action is to rename to .OLD and also rename EVNTSVC
to .OLD - pls advise.
PL2515.exe - ***not clear on google what I should do - no action taken***
QTTASK.EXE - Movie Player - now unchecked.
mstask.exe - no action taken but probably ok.
KB891711 - a Microsoft fix which may or may not be a problem - no action taken.

I have downloaded and run Adaware (got rid of 404 instances), Spybot (16), latest
AVG (0) and ZoneAlarm (0) - I already had AVG and Zonealarm running. I have also
turned off email scanner in AVG as it is also running in ZoneAlarm - is that a good
decision????

I also took the actions to increase my security and privacy settings but they made
IE unusuable so I have reset them to Medium as I have adequate security as above.

So having done all the above the problem still occurs. Could it relate to AVG which
I have got running on an automatic schedule as follows...

Test Plan in basic mode 5.00am
Update Plan in basic mode 03:43am

You gave me a fair bit of work to do which has clearly helped already. Thanks for
the help for far and appreciate any further help.
