Hello Kara,
Consider first checking whether_ a problem may have occurred because of the presence
of a virus or malware.
If you don't have antivirus and anti-malware applications, consider installing and
updating the following and then running them in Safe mode. The antivirus scan should
be set to scan all-files. Do not install more than one antivirus application to
the system_ because where there is more than one, they are likely to conflict with
each other. You can however install more than one anti-malware application.
AVG antivirus 7.5 Free:

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4

Lavasoft Ad-Aware 1.06

Lavasoft Reghance 2.12 (installation needed by Ad-Aware for scanning the Registry).

Also consider running_ the 'Cleaner' tab of Ccleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
If that does not resolve the problem, try runnng "ScanDisk" and "System File Checker"
("SFC") in Safe mode.
To run SFC go: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools/System
File Checker (or use "Find" to do a search of your system for "sfc.exe" and double-click
on it to open).
Then in SFC before doing any scan first go:
Settings.../ and
CHeck the item: "Check for changed files"
and also CHeck the item: "Check for deleted files"/ click on "OK".
Then click on "Start" to start the scan.
SFC may be able to restore deleted or corrupted files from (where "x" represents
your drive letter) x:\Windows\Options\Cabs, or from your systems disk, (or from a
floppy disk where you make a note of the file and later find it on a friends Win98
computer or locate it on the Internet (virus-check the file) and then and re-run
the SFC scan) to restore the file.
I hope that helps.
Regards.
