Preventing trouble

A quick and dirty survey of posts in this forum shows that in many cases the root
cause may lie in inadequately protected Windows 98 systems.
It is obvious that the effort to sort out issues is hugely greater than the effort
to prevent them – and does not always succeed.
I thought it might be helpful to create a reference post where visitors to this forum
who have a preventive turn of mind, or are scarred by a recent episode, could go
to look up how to protect their system in the first place.
My personal take on what constitutes practical, cheap (almost all free) and effective
protection is in the reply to this post. I’d be very interested in other views –
that would be a useful fund of knowledge and experience – after all we Windows 98
users are going to be increasingly “on our own” out there.
I see no reason why Windows 98 systems should not give years of good service.
