Data backup
-----------------
Keep at least one copy of your documents, photos etc. Burning to a CD or DVD is “permanent”
but inflexible (you can’t really do it every day !). My own preference is for an
external USB HDD (portable to other PCs) and to use Briefcase to backup my own data
files.
Every now and then I take a snapshot as well, since mass corruption on the PC would
be copied by Briefcase on to the external HDD.
Software backup
------------------
Make sure you keep CDs etc of software you have installed
Keep a note of sites you downloaded software from. You can add the file(s) you keep
your Internet favourites in to the Briefcase – see Data backup above.
Driver backup
-------------------
I use JetMar WinDriversBackup Personal Edition to copy all my driver files into a
folder, which is then added the Briefcase – see Data backup above. Its only a 32Mb
folder for my entire system.
Attack prevention
-------------------
Jetico personal firewall – reasons documented elsewhere in this forum.
Virus prevention
-----------------
AVG - update regularly
Spyware prevention
---------------------
SpyWareBlaster - update regularly
Susceptibility prevention
--------------------------------
I use Opera in preference to IE (but sadly have to keep IE for a few badly constructed
sites that only work with it).
Outlook (which you have to pay for) is at least a more manageable environment than
Outlook Express and easy to backup in full. Again the .pst file is included in the
Briefcase for external backup.
Clean-up
-------------
Trojans, Spyware, Adware: AdAware personal edition and SpyBot Search and Destroy
- - update both regularly
General system garbage, unwanted cookies, temp files etc: CCleaner
Registry accumulated garbage: RegSeeker
File system: Norton Disk Doctor
Miscellaneous: TweakUI repairs things like a damaged Icon Cache
