|A double colon is a synonym for REM.

Not quite. Just as WINE is a *replacement* for the Windoze APIs,
(but is **better** because you don't get the whole
tiny-problems-take-down-the-whole-system paradigm),
the double colon is also a *replacement*--but it is also **better**
because DOS has to _think_ when it encounters a REM;
a line that is a Label, it just hops right over
--without slowing down to scratch its head.
|Wow! That wasn't in my DOS 2.0 manual,

Actually, not only is your book devoid of the tips of Neil Rubenking, et al,
a DOS 2 book is missing a LOT of the stuff we consider basic.
e.g. If you look up CALL, you won't find that in DOS 2;
you only see COMMAND and EXIT[1].
|Great to have a hot tip for DOS programming after all these years. 8-)

...now that all formal support for all DOS-based OSes is over. 8-(
Ah, well. We'll have it when we use DOSEMU or DOSBox under Linux.
[1] All you folks who keep saying to use EXIT to start Windoze from Real DOS
(WHICH WON'T WORK) take note:
THIS is an example of proper use of that command.
