Nope. It won't work.
We need to test these things before handing them out willy-nilly.
I can think of no other replacement for REM
that doesn't involve a colon in Column 1.
When running (interpreted) batch files
you want every speed advantage you can get[1].
As I noted to dhm, the double colon is more than a *replacement* for REM.
[1] If you are going to run a batch file at every boot,
you may as well get those boot times down as much as possible.
