If the driver is listed as not properly installed, that *won't* be an error!
Windows 98 does not exactly have brilliant support for device drivers. So if you
unplug the devices, I'm not surprised to learn that your system is unstable. If you
install drivers, you need to actually turn on the devices too!
What else have you got the drivers installed for, after all?
Your particular system is (sadly) inherently unstable, because of the existing driver
errors/conflicts. If you had *no* errors/conflicts, so the system was inherently
stable, you might not experience this aspect of the problem. So it's worth
persevering.
