Could be any number of things, but start with the most obvious ones first. Update
and run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs through your system, the more anti-spyware
programs in particular, the better. Whether they pick up anything or not, do a defrag
of your system afterwards, especially if it hasn't been defragged in quite a while.
The larger your hard drive and the longer it's been since you last defragged, the
longer the defrag will take, so best to do it overnight using the Maintenance Wizard
feature in Accessories>System Tools>Maintenance Wizard, and do it in safe mode for
a more trouble-free defrag. Also see how much free space you have on your disk as
well. An unwritten rule of thumb is that it would be ideal to have at least 10%
free out of the total space on your hard drive just to give your computer some "breathing
room," so to speak. A combination of running anti-virus/spyware programs, defragging
and cleaning out unnecessary junk normally does the trick of improving performance.
But if you still find that freezing is a problem, add more details as to what exactly
happens and when.
As for Windows 2000, I personally would stay away from it if I were you. Windows
98 is fine so long as you stick to regular maintenance and if you're going to upgrade
to anything, it might as well be XP, even though I'm no real lover of that system.
