Try uninstalling your original modem drivers first.

Look in Control Panel - Modem. See if it shows the correct name on one of the COM 
ports. If the old modem still shows then you still have the drivers installed. If 
it shows the correct name then let it test your modem to see if there is a connection.

If you look in Network and right-click on your ISP connection and select properties 
it should show you which modem is being used. I installed a new modem 8 months ago 
and I couldn't get connected until I selected the new modem from Network.
