A truly radical approach--though **installing IE as a separate component**
might be considered a nice idea.
The rendering 
engine may be called by some (poorly-written) apps.
There are other reasons to keep Internet Exploder around (in a neutered state).

The wisest thing to do in the majority of cases.
An entry in the software firewall's parameters
which limits (forbids?) IE's access to the 'Net is also wise.

Yup.  There are few reasons to use Internet Exploder any more with W98.
The notable one is **I really want to get my Windoze box infected**.

Ripping Internet Exploder out by the roots is a radical step
and will leave some folks in the lurch.
