As gewg says it sounds like you HD is dying. You could start your comp up in DOS 
mode and run Scandisk with a full scan to check any bad sectors on the drive.

As you comp is staring up hold down the Ctrl key until you see the DOS menu. Select 
Command Prompt Only then type in Scandisk and enter.

If its asking you to insert a boot disk then the startup files are probably missing 
or corrupt. If you have a boot disk with Sys.com on it then you can put these files 
back. Start the comp up with the boot disk inserted, check in you BIOS for the boot 
sequence to startup from the floppy. At the A:\ just type Sys C: and this will transfer 
you system files back to your HD.
