I was able to click on the start button immediately after re-booting and then I was able to shut down, go into DOS and go to a previous registry. This brought my computer back to life. Upon careful examination I noticed a new box in the task bar that read "matcli", I believe. After googling this word I found out that this appeared as a result of the new printer I just installed (a hewlett packard) It has this "instant support" package on its installation disk that has been known to cause problems with operating systems. I should probably uninstall this package or at least stop it from opening at start up but with my computer now working I think I will wait until I see some sign of trouble and then uninstall this package. Thank you to everyone who took the time to read through my problem and offer assistance.
