I went to Gateway's site and found an audio driver file to download. I had no idea what it would do, but I tried it anyway. I now have sound. Apparently there was an audio SYSTEM driver that I was missing. Looks like card drivers are no good without all of the PC's system drivers. Anyway, MANY thanks to any and all who responded.
