What IS "SET path" and

When my computer boots it shows the SET path for the C drive to point to Norton Ghost. WHAT IS "SET Path" and does it need to point anywhere in particular? Having boot problems and have ran HJT, Adaware, AVG free, Spybot. Cleared all problems but mouse freezes in mid screen at boot at least half the time and with it the rest of the boot series. Any help would be appreciated. Links, advice, anything. Steve
