Good.
I'm still thinking **borked device driver**
--and as a possible cause: **flakey spot on the HDD surface**.
Nuking the old driver and making a fresh copy should answer this.
Have you done a Scandisk/Defrag lately?
It might be useful to know what all you see on the screen before it craps out
(and what you hear).
Something else that might help:

|So there is NO NEED to have a SET path on boot?
|
Not what I said.
There is no need for most folks to run the two *DOS* startup helper files.[1]
Windoze has its own config files.
If text about PATH is being *displayed*, that sounds like DOS.
|[...][Ctrl-Alt]-Delete will not reboot[...]
|Removing all the BS in start up makes boot faster of course
|but the freezing issue has me stumped.
|Once past that[,] PC runs fine for long periods.
|
If you could get the Warm Boot technique to work,
that might indicate a HDD on its last leg.
(Once it gets spun up all the way, everything works OK.)
Does the 2nd try always work?
Does your HDD make any funny noises?
|Will try the mouse change but have doubts.
|
It's a Hail Mary--but it's easy to try because most nerds have a spare.
|Unsure how to shut this off with run.
|
Huh??
[1] I actually *do* run AUTOEXEC.BAT
because I like to have DOSKEY[2] loaded for when I open a DOS Box.
[2] A Command Line editor.
