Hourglass monitor

First my Compaq Presario monitor only looked like it was having a seizure, wiggled
intermittantly, then it shrunk into an "hourglass" figure with both sides totally
black. I have tried the display buttons to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions
or do I just need to break down and buy a new monitor? Please help! Thanks! Marilyn
