Since USB mass storage devices use different drivers under Windows 98, some of the drivers will show the USB "eject hardware" icon in the taskbar and some will not.

For those drivers that do not show this icon, you simply remove the device when it's not active (ie. being read or written to).

There are "Generic USB Mass Storage Drivers" available for Win9x systems, such as Maximus Decim Win98SE English or Cruzer Win95.
