I read all messages but could not find the answer for me.
Since 2004, I have had a laptop with XP Pro, MACHINE1, and an old WIN98, MACHINE2.
At that time, after a lot of frustration, I managed to see all shared disks of MACHINE1
on MACHINE2 and vice versa - the problem was the firewall on the XP machine.
Recently I had to rebuild the OS of MACHINE1, and though on it I now see the disks
of MACHINE2, I am unable on MACHINE2, Win98, to see those of MACHINE1, XP. It asks
for a password for \\MACHINE1\IPC$, whatever that means, so I cannot go on.
However, by disabling "guest" and also "Simple file sharing" in the folder options
on MACHINE1, I am able to see the shared disks of MACHINE1 on another XP Home machine,
MACHINE3, if I supply both a login and password in the pop up window. But the pop
up window in Win98 has only one possible entry, the password. Incidentally I see
MACHINE3, XP Home, on MACHINE2, Win98.
Hence, the share of MACHINE 1, XP PRO, works only if the OS supplies a pop-up windows
with both login and passwd, which Win98 does not.
I believe the "guest" account on MACHINE1, which allows login with no password, does
not have its permissions set correctly, though I have set them both in the "sharing"
and in the "security" tab. Perhaps if that account were correctly set, then the XP
share would work on a Win98 machine.
So it's a question of permissions, but I have no idea where to look.
Thanks, Denis
