|drive shows up in device manager, but not as a drive in explorer :-(  
|removing drive from devicemanager does not help either

|if I reboot with usb stick installed, it is not powered (led stays off)

Sounds like hardware failure to me.

Do you have a dual-boot setup so you can try it with another OS?
Tried booting to a Linux CD (Knoppix, EBCD)?
