RAM upgrade problem

Ok, so I'm running a dual boot system. I just installed a 1Gb DDR400 memory that is working just fine in XP. The problem is when I boot to W98 the system just shuts down and only runs in safe mode. When I remove the 1Gb memory it goes back to normal. Does anyone have a solution for this? I mean other than just running XP. Thanks in advance
