In Windows98, open the System.ini file. You can use the (Windows program) SYSEDIT
to do this. Of course, remove the 1G memory stick if you have to, to get Windows98
running.
Click on START
Click on RUN
In the little box that opens up, type in SYSEDIT
That will open a new window with five 'pages' tiled out. If you look at the top of
each of those pages you will see that each has its own name. They are:
AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
WIN.INI
SYSTEM.INI
PROTOCOL.INI
Click the 'X' to close all the pages there except for SYSTEM.INI
On the SYSTEM.INI page, scroll down to the [VCache] section
Edit the lines in the [VCache] section by adding >>> MaxFileCache=512000
so that your vcache section looks as follows:
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Save the file, and close out that window. A reboot is necessary for the changes to
take effect.
(Put your 1G stick back in when you shut it down for the reboot)
Some people have recommended adding other lines, like MinFileCache but this is unnecessary.
A Microsoft web page referring to this is at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q253912
