It seems as if you aren't beginning properly.
If you are installing Win98 from the Win98 install cd, there is no Bootdisk involved.
Back in the good old Win95 days, they did have an install procedure which involved
using a boot floppy (which would load CD-ROM drivers because the Bioses back then
did not have an option to recognize a CD-ROM on startup).
But an Install of Win98 from a Win98 CD-ROM is accomplished as follows:
1. Computer on (and it doesn't matter what the computer does or is doing -- we just
want it on so we can open the CD-ROM tray)
2. Insert Win98 install CD in tray and close.
3. Power Off (best practice) then after 10-15 seconds, Power back On.
N.B. you could replace step 3 with a CTRL-ALT-DEL key press, but that is not best
practice.
4. The computer will start FROM the CD, so you will not have any problems
with the computer not seeing or accessing the CD-ROM drive.
You aren't trying to use a Windows95 boot floppy with a Win98 Install CD are you?
The scenario you described (C:\drive and D:\ RAM Drive are okay, computer can *see*
the E:\ drive but gives an *Invalid Media Type* message) can be caused by the hard
drive being partitioned into 2 partitions, but the second partition is *not* formatted.
AND the CD-ROM drive is actually the F:\ drive or some other letter (Old Hewlett
Packards made the CD-ROM drive R:\ , and some other manufacturer -- can't remember
which -- made the CD-ROM drive K:\)
Also, the scenario you described could be caused by certain configurations with NTFS
and FAT partitions on the same hard drive. What Operating System was on that hard
drive before this current moment now?
**Thanks to Keith for pointing out the "why do you have a RAM drive for installing?"
issue. Keith is right -- the Win98 Emergency Boot Disk uses a ram drive -- but the
Emergency Boot Disk is not used for installing or reinstalling Windows98 from a CD
when you are following the procedure envisioned by the creators of the Win98 install
CD.
Follow steps 1 through 4 above, Then if you have problems let us know.
Hope this helps.
