It checks the files on your hard drives and the next time you check it will tell you what extra files have been added, size, date, location etc. So you can tell if some malware or anything has gotten in without you noticing. You can add folders that can be ignored like recent documents, temporary internet files, cookies etc because these are being changed\updated all the time. You can also do a System Restore.
