The odds are low. You might try installing the drivers for the last win98/ME scanner
in the same series by the same manufacturer, and hope that they really did not change
the electronics much.
Alternatively, consider downloading an image of a "live LINUX CD", burn to CD, then
boot the PC into LINUX. "live" means that the PC runs from the CD, and by default
nothing is installed on the hard drive. The odds are fair to good that a modern
live CD will support most scanners. Be sure to plug in the scanner, before booting
into LINUX. Many live CDs are free. I would start with KNOPPIX, although that is
a very large download (700 Meg for the CD version, more for the DVD version). Both
versions also come with many applications, such as Open Office, a picture viewer/editor,
Mozzila/Firefox, etc.

Other live CDs are listed at:

And, think about UBUNTU, which seems to be getting quite a following:

By the way, if you get to like working in LINUX, most live CDs also offer an option
to install on the hard drive, or at least copy 99% of the files to the hard drive
for faster access.
