Im in a similar situation as yours, at least the dealer told me some problems with W98 so I didnt buy the USB2 drive before adding a usb2 pci card. However some motherboards can not support USB2 contrary to advice received. To save photos buy a CD writer(EXT USB1) and take a week or so to copy your photos( but make sure they are readable on a newer computer in case the photos are in an old code which may be unrecognised today- but whatever you do copy ASAP even in a format such as jpeg or gif as a precaution. Sorry about the low tech reply but needed before any fiddling around causes the loss of your photos and follow the advice of the other posts about backing up..
