It sounds like you aren't backed up. Start there.
A CD burner is apt. Make MULTIPLE copies; keep one OFF-SITE.
Relying on a single copy of your data
on magnetic media is just asking to be smitten.
See the recent thread **need help desperately with saving PICTURES!!**.
As to an external drive, this far into the 21st Century
(with the one caveat of DEVICE DRIVERS), external drives are commodity items.
READ THE SIDE OF THE BOX.
If it doesn't SPECIFICALLY mention *your* operating system (and VERSION),
move on to the next manufacturer's product.
