Ok lets see where to begin? First of all the computer is a Dell Espirion 3500. Obviously
it has an Windows 98 SE operating system. The computer was given to me by my roomate
when he bought a new one, so I do have internet access and the ability to download
using his. My computer has been expierincing many issues, insluding constant freezing
and data loss. Recently it has stopped finding the original drivers for an unknown
reason so I cant go online, and when I try to open up "my computer" it either takes
forever and then freezes or just stops.
I have a boot disk with FDISK as well the windows se install disk. Although Im not
the most computer literate person I understand basic commands and directions...haha
(i can read)...I followed directions from another forum here that told me how to
use FDISK to delete the exisitng partitions and then to make a new one, and set it
as "Active". Having done that it says that there is 1 partiton that it is indeed
active and that its a "FAT32"? and has 100% usage.
The command from the A: prompt (floppy) with the boot disk in of "FORMAT C:" doesn't
work as it tells me bad command or file name. Im assuming that it does not have the
format file on the disk? So that way to format the drive has not worked. My roomates
computer doesnt have a floppy drive so i cant add it to my floppy.
Furthermore when I try to start the computer I get three options....one to start
the windows 98 Se setup, second to start without cd support. and three to start with
cd support. If i try to use option one, it begins to run Scandisk (automatically)
and after telling me that it is fixing files. I get the following message.
"Not Ready" "Format Terminated" and thats all.
When I try to start without CD support but i have the cd in the drive (D) I type
in D: and at the prompt i type "setup"...This one again takes me into scandisk but
a different color screen funny enough. After working its way up to 18% everytime
it stops and gives me this message..
""To finish repairing drive C, move or delete some files from its root directory,
and then run scandisk again. I have no idea how to accomplish this as the computer
will no longer run Windows and only goes into DOS. I have tried many commands such
as "ERASE" or even tried to use the "DIR" command when i was in the C prompt. THat
gives me this message...
"There is no volume label for the C drive"
any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated as Im at the end of my rope and
wondering whether this is a lost cause. Once again i do have access to downloads
on my roomates computer but i dont believe that will help much as without a floppy
drive there is no good way to transfer that information to my computer. Thanks for
the advice. If im missing anything let me know, ive tried to look online through
this site and others and no matter which way i get into scandisk, or even when it
actually starts to format it always stops and has a reason. Thanks again!
