Ok, after downloading GDISK and DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) from SourceForge. I
put the proper text into a file in Notepad and titled it GDISK.BAT. Also to (james)
my cd drive was D and not E...so i made the proper changes to the code. When I start
the computer and get it to the correct prompt i type the command GDISK.BAT as instructed.
I recieve the following messages.....
D:\>D:\GDISK 1 /DISKWIPE /Y
GDISK (E) Uknown switch -- /DISKWIPE
D:\>
D:\>D:\GDISK 1 /MBR /WIPE /Y
Partition Status Type Volume Label Mbytes System Usage
No Partitions Defined
GDISK (I) Master Boot Record Reinitialised
D:\>
D:\>D:\GDISK 1 /DEL /ALL /Y
GDISK (E) No partitions to delete
D:\>
D:\>D:\GDISK 1 /CRE /PRI /SZ:100P /FOR /Q /V:WIN98 /Y
GDISK (E) Invalid partition size -- 100P
D:\>
D:\>D:\GDISK 1 /ACT /P:1
GDISK (E) Invalid partition number -- 1
Now i have already ran FDISK and it tells me that there is an active partition using
all available usage..(100p) So instead I took out that disk that i put GDISK on,
and put back in the Windows 98SE disk..this is an OEM disk not a dell one. When i
type in "setup" it automatically begins Scandisk again...and wow for the first time,
it completes scandisk.........only to tell me that
"Please wait while Setup intializes"
"Scanning System Registry"
"Cpoying Files needed for Windows Setup"
"Setup has been interrupted or canceled and connot continue"
Why on earth it stops i dont know, I obviously am not pressing any buttons or attempting
to take anything out of the drives or turn the computer off.
So then I took out the win98se cd and put the disk i created of DBAN(boot and nuke)...first
i tried the old one, but i found the beta version and ran it. i followed the instructions
and used the "autonuke" command it takes roughly 4 hours and then it stops and says
the it found non-fatal errors and cannot complete the scan....Is my hard drive just
done? Are there any gurantees that if i replace it i wont find that the processor
or motherboard is bad? I really dont want to spend mych more money on it than i have
to, but its my only computer and i would love to get it running again. Thanks for
the help...
