Staying with this topic for a moment....

I have gotten into the habit of deleting the temporary internet files and cookies
every time I go offline. The result is that after using Ad-Aware for a few years
I have to say it has never found ANYTHING of importance. All it lists are the MRUs
associated with various programs.

On the handful of times I forgot to delete the temporary internet files before I ran Ad-Aware, sure it found stuff. All I would do is delete the temporary internet files and cookies, run Ad-Aware again and the second time around it would find NOTHING but the MRUs. You don't need an anti-adware program to delete temporary internet files. I would have been no worse off if I had never run an Ad-Aware scan. All Ad-Aware ever found were files that should have been deleted anyway. Maybe I'm just lucky or maybe it shows how useful good computer maintenance habits can be in keeping your system clean. Contrast this situation with a problem a friend of my wife had who complained that her XP system was slowing down and web pages were taking longer and longer to load. It turns out she had over 3 GB of files in her temporary internet files folder. Didn't know she needs to clean it out.....at least every once in a while. It sounds impressive when an anti-spyware program flags lots of files, but are those files really all a threat? The more files an anti adware/spyware program finds, the better the program appears to work, and the more the user thinks they need it. Most virus scanners pick up the really nasty trojans and script files that could potentially do damage and delete them before they can infect your system. And if you are thinking about installing that great sounding free software you have just been offered, do some research BEFORE you install it. I would be interested in reading the experiences of others.
