Hmmm. First time I've heard of that failing.
|Is Linux a viable alternative?

(Assume that only a small fraction of those who *use* it actually bother to register.)
Linux has better hardware support than ANY other OS.
(Think: Backwards compatibility; Think: Hacked to work by nerd Linux users.)

For an old box, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, Xubuntu, etc. are viable.
If you're willing to max out the RAM, Kubuntu (etc.) becomes an option.
It doesn't cost a cent to try Linux
--and with the multitude of bootable Linux CDs out there,

you don't even have to **install** it to try it.
Once the OS has loaded from the bootable CD,
open up the (free) copy of OpenOffice(.org) and mess with on old document.
When dealing with old (ostensibly Microsoft format) documents,
most people find that OOo is superior to M$ Office.
Open up Firefox and see if you can discern any difference
from the way it handles under Windoze.
|Alternatively, is there any way I can use my old Presario desktop
|which had w95 updated to win98se

Use it to do what?
